What is NID?
NID (National Institute of Design) is a design school in Ahmedabad,
India. The institute functions as an autonomous body under the Department of
Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, government
of India. NID is recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research under Ministry of Science and Technology, government of India, as a
scientific and industrial design research organization. In 2010 Business Week
placed NID in its list of top design schools in the world.

Eligibility Criteria:
Master of Design (M.Des.):
Candidates applying for the M.Des. Programme
(any discipline) must fulfill the following criteria:
Age Limit:
Candidates up to 30 years of age on or
before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable by three years for candidates
belonging to reserved category).
Indian Nationals in the general
category and candidates in overseas category born on or before 30 June 1987 are
not eligible for admission.
Indian Nationals in reserved category
(OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June 1984 are not eligible for
admission.
Educational Qualification:
Applicants must either have appeared
for (results awaited), passed, or will be appearing for any of the following
degree examinations before July 2017:
Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
under the 10+2+4 (or more) system, from any university or institute recognised
by law in India.
Diploma in design under the 10+2+4
system, from any university or institute recognised by law in India.
OR
Applicants must either have appeared
for (results awaited) or passed, before July 2016, a Bachelor’s degree in any
discipline under the 10+2+3 system from any university or institute recognised
by law in India.
Note:
In case the degree/certificate has
been obtained from a university/board of any country other than India, an
equivalence certificate must be obtained by the candidate from the Association
of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, prior to admission. Visit www.aiuweb.org

Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) and
Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD):
Candidates applying for the B.Des. and
GDPD programmes must fulfill the following criteria:
Age Limit:
Candidates up to 20 years of age on or
before 30 June 2017 are eligible to apply (relaxable by three years for
candidates belonging to reserved category).
Indian nationals applying in the
general category and candidates in overseas category born on or before 30 June
1997 are not eligible.
Indian nationals in reserved category
(OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD) born on or before 30 June 1994 are not eligible.
Educational Qualification:
Applications for academic year 2017–18
are open to applicants who have passed or will appear for higher secondary
(10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2016–17 from any recognized
board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent.
Examinations considered equivalent to
these are as follows:
• Final examination of the 10+2 system
under a central or state board recognized by the
Association of Indian Universities
(AIU, see www.aiuweb.org).
• Intermediate or two-year
pre-university examination under a board or university recognized by the
Association of Indian Universities (AIU, see www.aiuweb.org).
• Final examination of the two-year
course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
• Senior secondary school examination
under the National Institute of Open Schooling, with a minimum of five
subjects.
• Any public school, board or
university examination completed in India or in any foreign country recognized
as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities
(AIU, see www.aiuweb.org).
• H.S.C. vocational examination.
• General Certificate Education (GCE)
examination at the Advanced (A) level taken in London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka.
• High School Certificate Examination
from Cambridge University or an International
Baccalaureate diploma from the
International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
• Candidates who have completed final
examinations for class XII (or equivalent) outside India or from a board not
specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian
Universities (AIU) confirming that the examination they have passed is
equivalent to the Class XII examination conducted in India.
Exam Pattern:
The Design Aptitude Tests will be
conducted in two stages:
Stage 1: Design
Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
Stage 2: Design
Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains
Design Aptitude Test (Prelims):
The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
primarily evaluates each candidate on the following abilities:
• Knowledge
• Comprehension
• Analysis
• Creativity
• Visualisation
The DAT Prelims consists of two parts:
Part I: Multiple-choice
questions marked out of 70 points. This part has questions with one or more
than one correct answer. The responses of this part will be recorded on an OMR
sheet and evaluated digitally.
Part II: Subjective questions marked out of 30 points,
with responses to be provided in visual and/or written formats.
The Design Aptitude Test (Prelims)
consists of an examination for three hours duration and will be marked out of
100 points.
This is a pen-and-paper test conducted
at the same time on the same day across all test centres.
The question paper is in English.
All questions are compulsory.
There is no negative marking.
Based on the DAT Prelims scores,
separate merit lists shall be prepared for each category
(OPEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PwD).
Shortlisted candidates only will be eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam.
Design Aptitude Test (Mains):
Based on the scores obtained in the
DAT Prelims, eligible candidates will have to appear for the DAT Mains.
The Admit Card for shortlisted
candidates will be available for download only on the official NID admissions website
(www.admissions.nid.edu).
NID will not provide accommodation for
applicants appearing for the DAT Mains; therefore, the candidates must arrange
accommodation at their cost.
DAT Mains for M.Des:
The DAT Mains for this programme
consists of two parts:
Studio Test:
This may consist of tests in different
formats such as drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions
etc. This test will be marked out of 100 points and will be conducted in
English.
Interviews:
The interviews will be conducted
separately for each discipline, immediately after the
Studio Test, at the same centre.
